Man vs. Nature

The two main aesthetics that enter my design process are the architectural masterpieces in the style of Brutalism and embrace of imperfection in the Japanese practice of Wabi-sabi.  Both are an embrace of what is.  Brutalism is marked by solid form.  It is often and expression of tremendous mass and structure with a truthfulness and honesty of materials.   Highlighting rather than shrouding it’s supporting structures and often marked by raw cast concrete, it is form of minimalism on an epic scale .

The Japanese aesthetic of Wabi- Sabi is connected to such ideas but enters an element of refinement.  Centered on the beauty within natural materials and the acceptance of imperfection.  It balances on a delicate line of finesse and impermanence.

There is a great potential for beautiful and unique conversations between these two design outlooks.  The permanence and structure of form and function while highlighting the unique aspects and defects of carefully selected materials.
